The Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada is planning its 2011 National Forum in collaboration with the “Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada (IPAC)” September 29, 2011 to October 1, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

This national forum will bring together health care professionals and practitioners to strengthen bonds of Indigenous knowledge and cultural safety. This Forum provides opportunities for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Nurses to come together to share, support, and network and link our knowledge across a wide variety of diverse, yet overlapping health topics.

Please submit your oral or poster presentations by the deadline, June 24, 2011. This year’s theme, “Sustaining a Healthy Future: From Indigenous Knowledge to Cultural Safety” focuses on training and practices that are culturally relevant, safe and informed by Indigenous knowledge.

Abstracts address the specific health needs of Aboriginal peoples; speak to the commitment of culturally safe practices; and describe training initiatives that bring a cultural perspective into planning and processes will be given a priority.

Abstracts must meet one of the following criteria for priority consideration:

  • Submission by Students/members (A.N.A.C.)
  • Research reflective of the Forum theme

Presenter Biographies

David Courchene Jr. :

Dave Courchene Jr., Neeghani Aki Innini (Leading Earth Man) is descended from a long line of leaders and chiefs of his people, the First Nations people of Turtle Island (America). He has directed his efforts through his role as a leader of sacred First Nation ceremonies to revive, renew, and sustain the spirit of all people. His greatest focus has been to inspire young people of all nations, races and faiths to find and follow their own visions. To this end he has held many youth gatherings throughout Canada and the United States to provide youths with knowledge to lead a balanced life, and has built a sacred teaching and healing lodge, the Turtle Lodge, in his home community of Sagkeeng First Nation, Manitoba.

Willie Ermine: 

Willie Ermine is from the Sturgeon Lake First Nation in the north central part of Saskatchewan. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1995 with a Bachelor of Education degree and completed his Master of Education at the University of Saskatchewan in 2000. His Master of Education thesis is titled “A Critical Examination of the Ethics of Research Involving Indigenous Peoples.” Willie is a faculty member with the First Nations University of Canada and lectures in the areas of humanities and Indigenous Studies. Some of his subject areas include: Cree literature in translation and indigenous systems of religion and philosophy. His primary duty as an Ethicist / Researcher is to promote ethical practices of research involving indigenous peoples with particular interest in the conceptual development of the ‘ethical space’ – a theoretical space between cultures and world views.

Fjola Hart Wasekeesikaw:

Fjola Hart Wasekeesikaw considers herself to be a ‘bridge’ in the facilitation of understanding of cultural competence and cultural safety in the provision of nursing care to Canadian Aboriginal populations. She is the principal author of the documents - Cultural Competence and Cultural Safety in Nursing Education: A Framework for First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nursing and Cultural Competence and Cultural Safety in First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nursing Education: An Integrated Review of the Literature.  Both documents were created as result of a partnership between the Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada (ANAC), Canadian Association Schools of Nursing and the Canadian Nurses Association. More recently, Ms Hart Wasekeesikaw assisted the Canadian Healthcare Association in their development of the “Cultural Competence and Cultural Safety in Health” course designed to provide training to health care professionals who work in Aboriginal settings and with First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples.   
Ms Hart Wasekeesikaw has completed research and evaluation projects for First Nations government and Aboriginal non-government organizations particularly in the area of Aboriginal nursing, health and human resources. This includes community-based research and program evaluations. She is knowledgeable about the health delivery systems in First Nations communities and the issues that affect these services. Fjola Hart Wasekeesikaw also teaches on a sessional basis for the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Native Studies.
Prior to becoming an independent consultant for the last six years, she was a nurse educator. Her experience included the coordination and teaching in the community-based University of Manitoba Bachelor of Nursing Education Program at Norway House Cree Nation.

Ms. Hart-Wasekeesikaw is a member of ANAC; she is an active practicing registered nurse and has her Master of Nursing degree. She served as vice-president, president and was on the ANAC Board of Directors. Fjola is member of the Fisher River Cree Nation in Manitoba.
