Beating the Streets, National Film Board of Canada and Lorna Thomas Productions (available from the NFB), 1998. Video traces six years in the lives of two inner-city Aboriginal teenagers who are survivors of abuse and who struggle to turn their lives around. 48 minutes; available in English.

Before I was Born: Preventing FAS and FAE in Inuit Communities, Pauktuutit Inuit Women’s Association, 2001. Video tells the story of a pregnant Inuit girl and the decisions and choices she makes about using alcohol. 26 minutes; available in English and some Inuktitut dialects with discussion guide, radio play and poster.

Circle of Hope: A Journey of Survival, Cancer Care Ontario (available from Za-geh-do-win Information Clearinghouse), 1999. Video documents the journeys of three First Nations women who have survived breast cancer. 20 minutes; available in English and Cree.

Donna’s Story, National Film Board of Canada, 2001. Documentary portrait of Cree woman’s journey from the streets to counselling Aboriginal adults and youth about abuse and addiction. 51 minutes; available in English.

Echoes of the Sisters First Nations Women: Breast Cancer, First Nations Breast Cancer Society, 1999. Documentary with an all-Native cast raises awareness about breast cancer and encourages a good breast health program. 30 minutes; available in English.

First Nations Breast Self-Examination Video, First Nations Breast Cancer Society in Canada, 1999. Teaching video with an all-Native cast helps women learn how to perform a breast self-exam. Intended for women and health care providers. Available in English.

Flipping the World: Drugs Through a Blue Lens, National Film Board of Canada, 2000. Video explores world of youth and drug addiction through those who have been there. Intended for students aged 13 and up, adults working with youth in education, health justice, guidance, health, personal/life planning programs, religious and moral education, alternative education and community youth programs. 30 minutes; available in English with guide for educators and facilitators.

Heads Up — A Self Esteem Video, YWCA of Yellowknife, 1994. The video features two dramas of young women living in the North and dealing with situations such as sexual assault and living with alcoholic parents, and how it affects their self-esteem. 29 minutes; available in English with guide.

Holding Our Own, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch National Clearinghouse, 1998. Video on strategies for stopping smoking during pregnancy and motherhood. 24 minutes; available in English.

Ikajurti, the Helper: Midwifery in the Canadian Arctic, Inuit Broadcasting Corporation and Pauktuutit (available from Pauktuutit Inuit Women’s Association), 1990. Video examines the role of the traditional Inuit midwife and the approach of an innovative Northern birthing centre. 50 minutes; available in Inuktitut with English subtitles.

Video features diversity of youth speaking about the destructive effects of homophobia, name calling, violence, isolation and depression, including a two-spirit youth presenting information from a First Nations perspective. Video intended to assist Aboriginal families and communities providing supportive response to persons with HIV/AIDS. Legends sxwexwxiy’am: The Story of Siwash Rock, Full Regalia, Omni Film and the National Film Board of Canada (available from the NFB), 1999. Contemporary retelling of Coast Salish myth. Faced with unemployment and the unplanned pregnancy of his girlfriend, a young man finds making the right choices isn’t easy. 24 minutes; available in English.

A Long Walk — Journey of an AIDS Activist, Bibby Productions and National Film Board of Canada (available from the NFB), 1998. Video documentary of Native Canadian Ken Ward and his advocacy for HIV prevention and treatment and work with First Nations peoples. 49 minutes; available in English.

Ojigkwanong — Encounter with an Algonquin Sage, National Film Board of Canada, 2000. Documentary on the healing journey of an Algonquin Elder, from poverty, loss of culture and alcoholism, to his search for the reconciliation of his peoples. 26 minutes; available in English and French.

Our Nations’ Elders Speak, National Indian and Inuit Community Health Representatives Organization, 1997. Video celebrates the lives of Elders from First Nations, Inuit and ethnocultural minority communities. 28 minutes; available in English with training manual.

Precious Gift, Saskatchewan Institute on Prevention of Handicaps, 1997. Video deals with the issue of drinking during pregnancy through portrayal of real life of young Aboriginal woman. Good for prenatal or health class; includes cultural traditional message from an Elder. 16 minutes; available in English.

Richard Cardinal: Cry from a Diary of a Métis Child, National Film Board of Canada, 1986. Video based upon the true story of the difficult life and eventual suicide of Richard Cardinal, a Métis adolescent moved to numerous foster homes during his life. 29 minutes; available in English and French.

Saputjinik — Healing Each Other, Centre for Academic and Media Studies (available from the NFB), 1999. Video account of an Inuit family’s attempt to end the cycle of domestic abuse and child maltreatment. 60 minutes; available in English.

So You Want a Healthy Baby, Fort Alexander Health Centre, Pine Falls, Manitoba, 1996. Educational video targetting future parents in First Nations communities about the importance of pre-natal care, breastfeeding, etc. 12 minutes; available in English.

Spirit in Motion: Active Living and Aboriginal Older Adults, National Indian and Inuit Community Health Representatives Organization, 2000. Video demonstrates 15 safe exercises with some great Aboriginal music. 30 minutes; available in English.

Sticks and Stones, National Film Board of Canada, 2001. Video addresses the issues of homophobia, name calling and families with gay or lesbian parents. Young children aged 5-12 describe their feelings in response to these issues as a discussion starter. 17 minutes; available in English.

Understanding Women and Substance Abuse: Creating Solutions, Creating Solutions Participatory Action Research (available from the Saskatchewan Institute on Prevention of Handicaps), 2001. Through interviews with women describing their own recovery and empowerment, the video explores how women can recover from substance misuse and thus prevent FAS. Suggested viewing by professional before general viewing due to sensitive nature; also recommended that professional is familiar with participants. 20 minutes; available in English.
